funky smell.
welp i noticed a smell today after i got out of my while it was still running. kinda smells like my camaro is eating up some oil. so i took it to our on base auto hobby shop. and the mechanic there, very good with everything he does. confirmed it smells like oil. well i was just wondering what it could be since i didnt get a chance to talk about it much with him because he was rather busy. and could only answer some of my questions while we walked and talked.
so any suggestions?
it is an 01 z28, and i can list the mods. but seeing if i cant get an idea from just previous members possibly experiencing similar problems.
thanks.

Is the oil smell coming from the exhaust or the engine bay? 99-01 LS1 motors have issues burning oil because of leaky rings. GM moved the factory they built the LS1 in and as a result the tolerances on the ringing equipment got screwed up, thus making most 99-01 LS1's burn oil. They actually had a factory recall if your car used X amount of oil in X miles you could get the motor replaced. If the smell isn't coming from the exhaust you need to find your leak.

If the problem really is an issue with the rings you can have the bottom end torn down and the pistons re-rung and that would fix the problem, but it's not a cheap solution. If it isn't using too much oil I probably wouldn't worry about it. Did you recently start using a different weight, type or brand of oil?
how about this, did you change your oil and maybe spill some? Could of been pushed down the outside of your exhaust by wind and now the smell is it burning off?
Just a theory.
Just a theory.
is your oil level dropping?
anyway
step 1 is the good ole newspaper trick of putting paper under your car after it's been run and going back the next day to see if you have any drips.
then, if there is no leak, monitor your oil level. If you are burning oil, the you can
A:sell the car and have it become someone else' problem but you must disclose everything
B:fix the car and spend some $$$
C:just keep adding oil as needed

yea the ole paper trick haha i use card board but to each is own ... by the way if there was a recall on the motor it wouldn't matter if it was modified or not if it a stock bottom end they will fix it they have to by law as long as YOU didn't rebuild the bottom end and its 100 % stock internally

There is no such thing as a recall for an oil burning issue. Recalls are government mandated base on a safety issue. Even emission failures are not "recalled" The Buick 3300 had some rough idle issues. They could fail emission even with everything working right depending on how the test was done. GM worked out a deal with the government. Any car that comes in with rough idle got about $250 worth of free parts up to 100K. Still no recalls.
There could be a GM bulletin that would tell a tech what the problem is, there could be that GM has extended the warranty for this problem. In rare occasions there is a class action law suit like with the mid 90’s V-6's. In that case GM had to do partial refunds for people that paid to have their intakes resealed.
I had an 89 Corsica with a 2.0 that was fitted with the wrong size piston. I took it to the dealer and he said it was not that loud of a knock. I got a copy of the bulleting and verified mine was one of the cars. They still would not fix it. I had to call GM. Next day I got a call from the receptionist wanting to schedule my repair

I apologize, it was an official service bulletin, not an actual recall.
