Why in the world would you put a 165 HP motor in there? It is going to be a hugh amount of work. I am pretty sure no mechanic on the planet will swap a 3.4 in where a 3.8 was for $600. Your going to need a lot of parts including the K member from the doner car.
Your 1996 3.8 is a OBD2 system and your 3.4 is a OBD 1.5. The computer and all the systems are not plug and play. You can not just plug in your Security system you will have to make changes in the wiring harness. What those changes are I have no idea. I do not know of anyone doing this swap.
3800 is the most common motor in junk yards, its the cheapest, it get better mileage, known durabilty and 20% more HP? Why?

OK OK you are either really messing with us or you have issues beyond human comprehension. If you cant find a new engine and you did find a 3.4L well lemme school you

There that thread will give you all you need to know about aquiring a new 3.8L and what you can pull it out of and what has to be done to a FWD engine to make it work in your car. Please dont ruin a 3800 car by putting a dog in it.

read the post I linked for you. Converting a FWD engine to your car is as easy as changing a few gaskets and swapping a couple of parts. I did the hard work for you by researching what you need and where you can get an engine from. Basically any VIN K engine from 96-2005 and any VIN 2 from 2003-2008.
Here is the list of the cars that will hold the engine you need.
OK I compiled a list of cars that you can find the Series II and Series III engines in. I did not research the years of the Holden cars since there are very few here in the states.
2005-2009 Buick LeCrosse
1996-2005 Buick Le Sabre
2006–2008 Buick Lucerne
1997-2005 Buick Park Avenue
1996-2004 Buick Regal LS
1995-1997 Buick Riviera
1995-2002 Chevrolet Camaro
2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala
1997-1999 Chevrolet Lumina LTZ
1998-2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo (Z34, LT, SS)
Holden Commodore (VS, VT, VX, VY)
Holden Caprice (VS, WH, WK)
Holden Ute (VU, VY)
1995-1999 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight
1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue
1995-1999 Oldsmobile LSS
1996 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight
1995-1999 Oldsmobile Regency
1995-2005 Pontiac Bonneville
1995-2002 Pontiac Firebird
2004–2008 Pontiac Grand Prix
1995-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix GT
Most wrecking yards will sell the engine out of any of those for around $400-$700 depending on miles and age.
Trust us when we say that these engines are easy to find and easy to make work for your car. The 3.4L will be much more work to make work in your car than another 3.8L even a FWD 3.8L

after reading this on a engine swap sounds very hard to do unless you are very mechanically inclined wow i would be way over my head my car has 150000 miles on it maybe i should sell it before anything major happens i wish i hadnt read this abouth taking engine out the bottom of car i bet this is a big job. i get nervous just thinking about it
It is not any harder than taking an engine out of the top. It is just going the other direction. To take an engine out of the top you need to free it of anything that ties it to the chassis. Same as going from below. instead of removing 2 bolts holding the engine to the chassis you remove 2 brake lines, 8 strut bolts, 1 steering knuckle, and last but not least 6 K-member bolts. Oh yea the trans X member too.
This is not much difference really.
