Depending on where you put it 2.5 inch could work....

im cutting the cats out, and have straight pipes and putting it about where the second cat would be

2.5" will work but you're going to have to be careful where you cut the cat off because of the way the Y pipe mates up to go into the cat.

lol, I'd need a 3". Are you getting an electric one? It'll be a pita if you get a screw on one because you'll need to lift the car to reach it.
