The X part of the frame is extremely resistant to twisting but does not handle offset collisions very well. Offset collisions are 90% of all collisions (at least for the car doing the hitting) Oldsmobile took the X frame and boxed it in making one of the best frames put on the road. That design is what is used by the Corvette and other supercars.

My 1960 Short Step Chevy truck had a frame designed like the Olds Frame and that was a very rigid and stout frame, also very heavy.
