The removable bell should not matter but the tailshaft will make or break the deal here. Check the length from the bell to the output shaft and not to the end of the tail. I know some transmissions will "hide" the output shaft where others will let it "turtle". If the length is the same to the output shaft then all you will need to do is replace the tail housing and you should be fine.

On doing further research, it looks like the Pontiac Firebird V6 98+ tranny would be compatible with my Camaro 98 tranny.
Anyone can confirm?

The newer Camaro and Firebird used "corporate" engines (same) and accompanying running gear.
They aren't "Chevy" or "Pontiac" specific parts like they were in the olden days.

Reason I'm asking is I can get hold of a 2002 V6 Firebird tranny and I want to make sure it would fit straight in without any mods.
I can't risk any mistakes this time (like with the 97 tranny not fitting), as I won't be able to send this one back and £500 is a lot of money to waste!! So if anyone knows for 100% sure it would be a straight swap (same belhousing, tails etc), I would appreciate the confirmation.

Hey guys,

My only concern now from what I've read is that if any of the electricals are different when it comes to connecting the tranny up.
From what I've read so far, the US scrapyards have all this info as its their business. I've tried getting in touch with a few but no joy! If anyone can take the time to check with their local scrappie to make sure that nothing has changed in the electrical side and that both are truly 100% compatible I would be willing to pay for the info via Paypal or something, I have a lot of money (and stress from the wife) riding on this.

when ordering make sure the plugins are the same on both transmissions, ie. the plugs/plugins are the same shape and have the same number of pins and wires.

 

Unfortunately I’m too far away to check the plugins and I probably wouldn’t know the difference anyway!
Now if anyone has a tranny wiring pinout diagram for the 98 V6 Camaro and the 02 V6 Firebird I could check for sure.

Got any photos of where you're getting the part numbers from?

As far as I can tell from the parts manual, the '98 to '02 M30 transmissions were the same, but I can't find "2406970/2" anywhere.

And BTW - should it read "24206970/2"?

24206953 is the case # I found for the LS1 version of the 4L60E and 24205618 for the 98+ L36's.
