Most of the time is the low pressure safety switch, meaning you are low or out of refrigerant and most likely have a leak. But it can be almost anything on the electrical side of the AC system.

Are you installing a new compressor? The oil is mixed with the refrigerant. The only time you add oil is when you add refrigerant. How much you add depends on the situation. If something blows out or is replaced you may need to add several ounces, if you have a slow leak you may need none.

The shop manual will list the specs. (This is a made up example) When replacing the compressor drain the compressor of oil and replace with a equal amount unless there is less then 2 ounces. If its less then 2 ounces then put in 2 ounces.

Default air compressor oil

thanks for your imput. i'm not sure what to do about this. see, i bought this car 4 years ago and the air never worked. i pulled the compressor thinking i needed to replace the clutch cause i noticed the clutch wasn't kicking in and out. well, when i pulled the compressor i never got not one drop of oil out out it. probably hasn't had any in years. it still turns freely. so i'm not sure what to do.

If it was me, I would buy an ebay compressor and a dryer receiver. Assemble the system with the recommended oil per the manual and put it under vacuum to see if it will hold. You could have another leak. Depending how bad the leak is you may want to get a single can of refrigerant with dye in it (check YouTube for how to fine a AC leak using dye) . If you have no leaks or repaired the leak put in the correct amount refrigerant. At that point if the system does not work you can start figuring out why. Note: if you find no leak leave the system under vacuum for 2 hours minimum. Since the system has been open for years you need to be 100% sure the is no moisture in any of the line.

Keep in mind that even if you compressor was 100% good when you took it off, if you removed the lines and exposed the inside to air for a long period of time it most likely bad now.

Just a FYI the most common failure point on a GM system from this time frame is the front seal between the compressor and the clutch. This allows the refrigerant to leak out, The low pressure switch will turn off the compressor. The low pressure switch is there to protect the compressor. If the compressor runs with low pressure it will starve for oil and rip itself a part. Replacing the seal in the compressor is a pain since there are several special tools need for the process. The minimum tools needed will cost more then the compressor from Ebay.

Any time you open a AC system to atmosphere it needs to be put under vacuum to remove the moisture that is in the air. The longer the system is under vacuum the more chance the water in the air will be removed.

If you have a air compressor

No compressor.
