Buying Guide/Advice - 1993 Camaro
Hello there,
I'm looking at a '93 Camaro this weekend, its a 3.4L V6 base model. Looks to be in pretty good order.
I've owned a C4 Corvette before, same year, but that was an LT1 V8 and had different quirks (COUGH Optispark). If you have any advice on what to look for, listen out for and checks to make I'd very much appreciate it
I know it's the base engine for the Camaro, but there are no 3800 cars here and a V8 is honestly not viable. I'm more interested in a weekend cruiser that's easier on the petrol.
I've had a glance around the forum already, and I know to check the underside for rust from roadsalt (I'm in the UK), and also to check lower intake manifold as apparently the plastic gaskets don't fare too well over time.
The car itself is an automatic, which I think on the '93 was the 4L60E box? I could be wrong, still learning. It's covered 57,000 miles (about 92,000km).
I know not to get pie-eyed and want to make sure I don't buy a complete lemon. How do the 3.4 V6 engines tend to do, are they reliable? Any other issues to be aware of?
Thanks in advance for any help

I had a '93 but it was a Z28,as I recall there were a couple of one or two year things about the car that changed in later models.
I really can't recall but it was an LT1 anyway, others here know much more than I about the V-6 cars ( and everything else for that mater lol) so stick around the experts should chime in pretty soon.
Sounds like a nice low mileage car so I would think it's got a lot of life in it yet.
Don't expect a lot better mileage, they're a little underpowered so you'll have your foot in it more to get moving.

I have a 94 3.4L with 255k miles on it, i bought it new with 4 miles on the odo in 94, but ts a 5 speed, some pointers to check...
1- look under the vehicle at both seat pans for corrosion also check in the corners by the fire wall for corrosion. leaves and other road rubble accumulate there.
2- check lower ball joints, they have grease fittings and there is a measurement to tell if worn.
3- check the front of engine for leaks especially around the water pump area and bolts that mount the accessories to the block. look at oil level and condition/color of oil.
4- check under the hood at your fuel injectors, water accumulates on manifold if not driven routinely and rusts them also.
5- check for moisture in the tail lights, also look for cracks along the color changes in the plastic.
6- check the headliner for droop, i am on my 4th one now.
7- switch ***** will crack as well as the sail panels by the side view mirrors.
8- look in the trunk and pull back the carpet, a bad hatchback glass seal will let water accumulate in there.
Original parts are getting really hard to find. These are some of the issues i have had over the years. good luck on your purchase!

Thank you all for your advice so far. I'll be sure to check the above points, they're much appreciated. Being a UK based car and the weather being what it is here, the corrosion issues could well be pronounced so I'll be double checking. I'll report back if I go ahead with it!
