Take the car out of gear, position the driveshaft where you can reach two easily and put it back in gear (or pull e-brake). Then get the other 2. Once you have it out, push one axel in @ a time maybe hit it with a mallet and look inside the carrier, you will see a c-clip on the end of the axel. Take a flat head screwdriver and manipulate the c-clip until it comes off. Then pull out the axel. do the same for the other side. Then you will see four larger bolts holding the carrier in place. Pull them out, but pay attention to which side they came from. Then carefully pull out the carrier, may be a little stubborn. Pay attention to the shims that are on either side of it and dont loose the races. (You will need a new installation kit anyway but keeping the shims, will give the mechanic a good starting point. After the carrier is out, go to the rear and take off the pinion nut with an impact. then beat the sh..i t out of the pinion and watch out because when it comes out it will be flying. (you dont need it anyway, again hang onto the shims and crush sleeve for the person who is rebuilding it....If I were you, I would ask around and find someone who has done many of these things.

what 383 says in the first part is right on for getting the driveshaft lose. 383 i am pretty sure when he says taking the axle out he is talking about removing the complete differential/axle assembly.

Well i replaced the whole axle. took me a few days, but now it runs great. No more rear end problems. But I discovered something else was wrong. When the fuel gauge gets to halfway the car starts to sputter and it sounds like it wants to die out. Any ideas on whats wrong?

Did this just start? Are you sure there is a half a tank of gas in the car?

Its been happening. I filled the tank up all the way and i put 160 miles on the car, and then it started to sputter. I figured that the car should at least go 200 miles on a full tank

Did this happen before you replaced the rear or just start after you replaced the rear. Does the problem go away after you filled the tank back up?

This was happening before we replaced the rear. Once i fill it up or put a few more gallons in, the problem goes away. But as soon as it gets to halfway it starts sputtering again

i would pull the pump and look it over. as the tank gets less fuel in it the pump is exposed and heats up, that heat will cause a old failing pump to lose pressure. have u checked fuel pressure when its sputtering, could be a bad pump, bad pump install or wrong pump.
