Default ASR (EBTCM) any help appreciated

On a 98 Z28
symptoms: ASR light won't reset and lamp won't light behind button. ASR light stays on on speedo panel.
Was told by 2 shops that the EBTCM is bad and needs replaced but I have talked to other owners and they say that its usually a sensor/bearing/connector/etc...... new Electronic Brake Traction Control Modules go for $1000/dealer $500/wholesale. Not something I necessarily want to buy if I don't need too. Anyone have any past experience with this? Any info is appreciated and to be honest I don't know what components/sensors it reads or uses other than the brakes.

Thanks In Advance,

Get the car scanned & see what the problem is. You need to go to a shop that can scan the ABS/ASR system. It is very expensive to throw parts at this system. If the ABS lite is off, it is not going to be a sensor problem, as traction control uses the same sensors that the ABS does.

Yes, get it scanned. If it is the ABS motor pack that is shot -- it is very easy to replace yourself, which I did on my '95...

ty to answer the above.... its been scanned by two different places; (Both said that the EBTCM were bad,) I've just heard that they had bad connectors and the motors and ended up redoing the parts...etc. Wanted to make sure it wasn't something else further downstream. I also got a used one off ebay (year specific) and they said that it would not communicate......

The ASR light stays on in the dash but the ABS light is not on. Thanks for the info that they use the same sensors.

I guess from here I will pull the motor on the EBTCM and make sure that it works and then onto buying a new EBTCM if its operational. The car is in storage over the winter so I have some time

Thanks for the info and if anyone has anything to add; I'm all ears.

The ASR used to work on my 99 camaro 3.8 V6 until i had to change the ignition coils and then got the same problem as yours "ASR OFF" light is on the speedo and the ASR button seems to be useless .
