AC wont work!

AC wont work!
My air conditioner on my 93 z28 turns on and blows air but its not cold at all. I found a leak on the top valve and switched it out with a good one, so now that doesnt leak, I recharged it and still no cold air. Any ideas on what my problem might be?

Does the compressor clutch engage? If not it could be you don't have enough refrigerant in the system, or you have a clutch/compressor problem. If it is engaging and no AC, the system may have moisture in it and freezing internally and needs to be evacuated with a vacuum pump, or the wrong type refrigerant is being used.

Probably low on freeon and the low pressure switch is cutting the compressor off. Probably need a recharge, but you may have a problem because the 93s still used R12, which is only available to licensed AC repair people.

I'd try to manually engage the cluch by jumping the clutch coil wires. Either way, getting an R12 system recharged would be EXPENSIVE, and I'd recommend retrofitting to an updated R134a system. It could very well be the pressure safety switch not allowing the compressor on. All you'd have to do to test it would be to jump the switch and take note whether the compressor clutch engages. If not, you may be looking at a compressor job.

There are several substitutes for R12 that do not require the system to be modified except for screwing on different fittings. One brand I used successfully is Freeze 12. It is available from various part stores and directly on line.
