Default 97 RS 3800 140k Brake lights don't work

The brake lights don't work "most" of the time but the 3rd brake light in the hatch ALWAYS works??? What would cause this? I don't even know where to begin. Sometimes they all work fine.
Rob

PS...did some searches but didn't find much.
Oh it is a 96 not 97 now I can't edit the top.

Sounds like bad wiring to me it's going to take a lot of time a wiring diagram a digital multi mete(or volt meter) and a friend that doesn't mind hitting your break pedal the whole time you search. Or it could be a bad brake on/off switch I'd start there since it's the easiest to get to.

check your fuses. then check for power at the switch both in and out. if good check for power and ground at the bulb. as you can see here the switched wire goes to the brake switch then to the blinker switch so could be either. 1995 4th Gen F-Body Exterior Lights also shows the center light is on a different circuit.

FYI - I fixed the problem with the brake lights (not 3rd brake light) It was the wiring plugin under the dash coming from the multifunction swich (I think) I messed with it and then it would work or not. I disconnected it and cleaned it with electronic cleaner and made sure all the prongs/tabs were in the sockets good. Put is back together and zip tied it together good. They have been working since.
Thanks for all of the help!

Default No brake lights

My son just bought a 95 camaro and we have a similar issue. no brake lights, third brake light works and the turn signals work, brand new bulbs so it has to be up near the switch. Thank you to Craby for posting the schematic, that will help.

My question is how difficult was it to get to the wiring plug in under the dash?

the plug for the brake switch is on the switch. if you look by the brake peddle you will see it.

Thank you Craby, I am wondering about the connection at the turn signal and hazard assembly, is that another connector that could be the problem. We are right now looking at the brake pedal switch.

Off of the switch on the brake pedal are two wires, orange is 12v no switched power, and blue. Off the switch there is not a wire that would go to the third brake light as it seems to indicate on the wiring diagram. I can not tell where the blue wire terminates up under the dash, but obviously it has to split to the third tail light and to the hazard/turn signal assy.
