It can come out the top but it is a PITA. Are you making your own motor mounts or buying the Kmember designed for the Gen 1 small block? You should pull the Kmember cause your going to want to verify oil pan clearance as you are making the motor mounts. If I remember right your going to have to cut up the oil pan also. We have one member who has done the convertion and I have seen a half a dozen cars that where already converted. If you do not buy the SBC Kmember kit plan on a lot of welding.

The reason you will get negative posts about it is because we get about one new person a month that says they are going to do this. We try to explain how much work it is and how its nothing like the old days. They say they are different and they are going to do it. 98% of the guys end up with less then 10 post and we never see them again. So in the last 4 years out of the 50+ people who said they are going to do it we had one guy that came back with pics after it was done. As you read thru the above thread you can see when he started he had no idea what he was getting into. You can run the numbers all day long the project was not worth the money he put into it. He would most likely not get what he paid for the car forget the 5K he put in it after. It was a good learning experance and my hat is off to him for finishing it. Most of the convertion I have seen are not "finished" the are "almost finished" they generally sell for less then the value of the parts.

I found the link to the BMR Kmember. In past research I found this is mostly used with drag race cars. Since the drag cars don't use any the stock electrical systems anyway it is more common to see SBC in drag cars then street cars.

Why not learn how to build a FI engine? The principals are the same as the carb engine only accomplished in different ways. You can build more HP and better economy at the same time. FI engines are not that scary. Actually now that I know how to work on them I find them much easier to repair then old skool carb engines.

If you already have the 406 you may want to look at a early 3rd gen. They are dirt cheap and they came with Carbs to start with.

yes i have the 406 allready it was in a 85 monte ss sold the car to my uncle and kept the motor. it ran mid 11's in the 1/4 with a 350 turbo behind it. i figured the camaro would be a little lighter and plus the 6sp would make a little more power. what could a person get for this 96 camaro its a z28 body is mint it is silver with black stipes. the m/t are gone and the interior has a few small places in it but its leather and has the bose sound system in it. Im only in the car about 1100.

Don't expect to make a bunch of money, shells can be bought pretty cheap. If its really great you might get lucky and find someone who totaled their car and it will save them a ton of money. Without the tranny I would guess it would sell at around $500-$800 of course where your at plays a huge part. The gutted V8/6 speed bodies are pretty common around me these days because they have recently dropped in prices on driveables. People are gutting them for other projects. They pull so much of the electronics and so many parts getting them back on the road is not cost effective without a complete doner. They become parts cars. The 6 speed and linkage is the key they are selling for between $1100 and $1500

I got lucky, I got a complete car for $1500
