96 lt1/t56 swap ?
i traded for a 96 camaro that is without the motor and trans. it had the lt1/6pd the car is clean and straight but i want to keep it a stick shift. i have a 406 that i want to put in there but will it bolt up to the 6sp if i buy one or do i need to get a 5pd. this is the first camaro i have ever had or been around so i have no clue. any help is graetly appriciated thanks
406? what series motor is it? I think I would be more worried about the engine fitting than the trans. You can usually get a bell that will fit any engine trans combo if you go to racing mags and look for scatter shields. Also if this is an older engine with the rear mounted distributor and carb you may want to think twice about putting it in the car. The LT1 that went into the car is a very capable engine and you can build it for alot of power pretty easy and cheap.

Can't figure why you would want to ditch a reliable FI injection engine for an OLD ford carbureated motor...asking for trouble and headache if you ask me...especially when you can pickup an LT1 for CHEAP take the time to learn and appreciate new technology. If you want a big block ford project buy an old Mustang
Well you said 406...that is what Ford built and put in the Galaxy 500 in the 60's for one...Chevy has a tendancy to stick with the same bolt pattern...but being an older gen engine to a newer gen tranny...not sure...if the block is a 400 it helps anyone trying to help you to know that...no way for us to assume anything other than it is an old ford 406...anywho just my 2cents
If you are wondering if the bell and trans will work with an old school 400 yes it will. You will need to find a flywheel and clutch that will work with your engine tho. The 400 engine had a counter weight on the end of the crank the LT1 did not. Good luck with the distributor... Yea there is a reason other than reliability that no one really has done what you want to do. Have you ever wondered why GM redesigned the venerable SBC? It was to fit this car. No other car the LT1 engine was put in had clearance issues with the distributor location.
