Soft parts like gaskets and seals life is based on time, years of life and hours of service not miles. A head gasket can be blown by high pressure like racing or by over heating but when you are talking about a 23 year old motor the head the head gasket failure can be mostly age. Installing another engine that has 23 years of age on it means you could be installing an engine that is weeks or months away from another head gasket failure.

Most used engine come from totaled cars. These car go through the insurance process then they are auctioned to a yard. That alone can take 6 -8 weeks and the engine can sit in inventory for a long time. The worse thing you can do to a old motors is let them sit. This can dry out the gaskets and seals and make them even more prone to failure.

In my 96 camaro (Project link in my signature below) I did the intake gasket but I choose not to do the head gaskets because the engine was only 7 years old (02 Motor installed in 09). had it been 10 years old I would have done everything. With the 3.4 1995 is the newest motor you can use. When GM designs a motor it so it will last 10-12 years. The wear on the metal parts of the motor is based on miles and how its used. This means if you take a low mile motor the was not used hard and you replace all the soft part like seals and gaskets, you have a like new engine.

Hi Gorn,
thank you for the information.
my friend's motor had hardly been used.
it has 80.000 km I believe.
he hardly drove the car; he's a mechanic.
just build a new engine himself.

is this ok then?

If he replaced all the seals and gaskets then it should be fine, I am a GM Master tech myself and there is no way anyone can make seals not age. All seals and gaskets are subject to age. Even the seals and gaskets used in airplanes have an age limit and they are made of the best material known. Seals in cars are made as cheap as possible. There is no reason for a car company to pay a penny trying to make a seal last 20 years.
