Default 94 V6 Gas Mileage

Anyone know what i can do to make my 94 v6 get better mileage? I just ended up putting it on the road in winter no less when i didnt want to but my last car blew the head gasket so i got screwed on that. I've heard better coils and wires make a difference for mileage. Car has 149k on it and runs great. I need better mileage then the car seems to be getting which from the looks of it is 50 miles to a 1/4 of a tank. I plan on doing MSD coils and possibly wires if i can find a set. I did try changing the TPS and IAC but when the ones i got for it are on it it will rev to 2000 rpm's and dump fuel. Any thoughts and tips would be helpful. It does have a cold air intake the previous owner put on it.

you should be getting between 20 and 30 mpg depending on your driving habits. test fuel pressure and have it scanned for trouble codes, see what comes up. could just need new 02 sensors and having your injectors cleaned and flow tested.

The spark thing is just plain wrong. A factory coil can deliver 80,000 volts, your plug only needs about 20,000 volts at cruising speed. Putting a 100,000 Volt coil in a stock engine is a waste of money. Unless your coils are damaged (which would show as a miss) you gain nothing from an upgrade. IF GM could get even .1 MPG better with hotter coils then you would have it from the factory. Plugs and wires can help but only if your current ones are bad. I do recommend replacing the plugs and wires if you are not sure how old they are (this is a age thing delco plugs and wiresare fine). You cannot really tell if a plug wire is good by looking and the real test to be sure they are good will cost you more than the wires.

The gas gage is complete crap (they all are) the last ¼ tank is completely different from the first ¼ tank. In fact when I fill my tank I will get about ½ of the car ranger before the needle falls back to the full mark. I get about 320 per tank and once I hit the half tank point I have about 80-90 Highway miles before I am on E (for me 3 gallons is about 1/2 a tank on the gage). The only way to really track your mileage is to fill you tank up set your trip meter and drive it. Now refill you tank at the same pump then mile/gallons used.

Once you have your plugs and wires and filters updated and you have verified you are NOT getting what your car is rated for and the car feels good (no other issues) swap out your primary O2 sensors.

how many gallons are you using, these gauges are progressive. at the level gets lower it drops faster. the tank is a wedge shape and is at an angle with the small end of the wedge down so as the level drops its takes less gas to make it go down the same. how do the spark plugs look? best to change plugs when you change 02s. especially if plugs are fouled. do the regular checks like air pressure in tires and brakes dragging. have you had it scanned for trouble codes. that can be a pain with the 94

I used to get 28 in my 3.4 auto. Just do a tune up and maybe some injector cleaner/seafoam.
