Default 2 Series or 3 Series Carrier?

I'm looking into getting a ring & pinion set (3.73) for Midnight. I'm checking the WS6 store and some say they are for 2 series or 3 series carrier. What is the difference and how do I check which I have?

Also I would like opinions on whether to go w/ the Motive performance gears or the SLP performance gears? I've heard the Richmond gears are a bit noisy so I'm not really interested in going that route.

Thanks

2 series put your gears mounting plat farther from the pinion creating a thicker gear then a series 3. but since you have a 5 speed 3.8l you most likely have a 3.23 rear end so it'll be a 3 series carrier. do you know if your car has a limited slip rear or is it an open carrier?
It dont matter what brand you have they will be noisey if it isnt installed correctly.

You're right I have 3.23. No I don't have the limited slip. No Posi I checked that and to see what gears I had when I started learning about the car and making upgrades. Pretty much the time I joined the forum, lol.

So I assume by what you said I need the 3 series?

Yes you do but before you order gears try to find a rear end from a z28 or ss. You can get them for a few hundred and youll gain posi trac and if you get one from a 5 speed you can find them with 3.42 and the odd few at 3.73. With an open carrier and 3.73 gears your going to get frustrated with all the one tire burn outs at every take off.
