Default 1st time changing tranny fluid

Hey guys, I was planning to change my transmission fluid for my 2000 camaro v6 5 speed soon because my gear grinds and my clutch isn't really that great. I heard that changing the transmission fluid might help with the grinding gears. When I bought the car I have no idea when the fluid was changed and I only driven the camaro for about 6000 miles over the past 2-3 years. I ordered my jack lift and jack supports on ebay for around 100$. Instead of using a 3/8 ratchet on the bolts is it possible to use a adjustable wrench? And how would I replace the filter and gasket. Any advice would be helpful, thank you!

Changing the fluid is not going to help grinding on a manual transmission. Do you grind going into reverse?

5 speed is a gear box, you can't just drain the fluid and there is no filter.

If it grinds going into reverse the clutch is the problem. When the car is sitting still and the clutch is pushed in there should be no moving parts. The grinding can only happen if there is something turning. The clutch is suppose to separate the engine from the transmission. When it is not fully disengaging you get grinding going into reverse.

While you have the trans out to change the clutch is the best time to change the fluid because you can tilt the trans on end and dump everything out. Some t5s do have drain plugs that does not get everything. Since manual transmission don't get hot the fluid does not really need changed but if you have the trans out and its 15+ years old it can not hurt.

Make sure you check the reviews on the clutch you intend to purchase. There are a lot of the Ebay/China clutch out there that do not last long, I have read many post from guys that said it did not make it a month.

Expect 4-5 hours labor. Depending on where you live anywhere from $60-$125 pe hour. Most shops would not install a cheap clutch because of the high defect rate.

Also it would be to have a shop check it. All you know for sure is that the clutch is not fully disengaging. It could be an issue with the hydraulic system. Its not likely but it is possible.

Make sure they put the right fluid back in. I think the T5 takes synchromesh MTF.

Personally, either get the clutch kit and flywheel from the local Advance/Napa/Autozone/Oriellys/Carquest and take it the garage to have done or let the garage order it for you.

The reason I don't like ordering parts like this off ebay is because you don't know what you're getting. If there is a problem with it or it fails on you, you have to pay to have it repaired twice and while you might have a warranty, you usually have to send the old back before you get the new, which means down time.

With ordering locally, you have a warranty that can be taken care of, in person, and in less than a day. That, and you usually don't have to pay labor again because most garages get labor reimbursement when a part from the parts store fails along with the warranty on said part.
