Default 02 z28 weird intermittent no start problem

i'm hoping someone has had this issue previously and can shed some light on the issue. last night, i went out to my car to start it after work, and when i inserted the key, it dinged like it usually did, but when i turned the key to start it, it died. no lights, no crank, no nothing. i used a jumper pack to jump it and it started. i went out to start the car this morning and it started fine. it started again fine after that, but when i went to start it again to go home from work, same issue as before. but when i pulled the key out, the dome lights came on. so i put the key in slowly and turned it slowly and it started just fine. anyone have any idea where i should even start on this? possibly and ignition switch? vats issue? bcm? any help is appreciated. thanks everybody!

sounds like vats may be acting up. try cleaning the key and spray some electrical cleaner in the key hole.

i don't think it's the vats system. i drove the car today and when i parked it in my garage it just randomly shut off. also, vats wouldn't disable all of the power, it would still allow all of the lights to work, the car just wouldn't crank and the security light would flash.

start by cleaning your battery terminals and cable ends. wire brush the heck outa them. may need to scrape them to get build up off. sometimes a layer of carbon can form and is hard to see. i had a issue like this and it was the ignition switch so you may want to look in that direction as well.
