The ABS & PCM are tied to each other via Class 2 Serial Data, However my PCM is going to have an F-body operating system (OS) installed for the A/C controls & Cluster controls.

The PCM, BCM, SRS, ABS & Cluster all share the Class 2 Serial Data circuit via a Splice Pack, Each module uses its own "Scan/Communication Protocol"

Circuit Description
Modules connected to the class 2 serial data circuit monitor for serial data communications during normal vehicle operation. Operating information and commands are exchanged among the modules. When a module receives a message for a critical operating parameter, the module records the identification number of the module which sent the message for State of Health monitoring (Node Alive messages). A critical operating parameter is one which, when not received, requires that the module use a default value for that parameter. Once an identification number is learned by a module, it will monitor for that module's Node Alive message. Each module on the class 2 serial data circuit which is powered and performing functions that require detection of a communications malfunction is required to send a Node Alive message every two seconds. When no message is detected from a learned identification number for five seconds, a DTC U1XXX (where XXX is equal to the three digit identification number) is set.

"critical operating parameter" (COP) Is the key word here, The ABS gets all its COP's from hard wired components, 3 wheel speed sensors & the brake light switch. If it will set U1XXX codes is unknown 'til I get this swap done. I will report if I do have issues!

Keep ideas/unforeseen issues coming!

Picture of the '98 Trans Am I got a lot of parts from, Got all parts for free for pulling the LS1/4L60E for a friend that's going to put the powertrain in a G-body Cutlass.

Hit a big Oak tree, His Girlfriend driving solo suffered a broken wrist & a little airbag burn.

About $3900 in essential swap parts, I could have saved a lot by buying used parts. Already had the Engine & Transmission.

I will not buy a run-to-death Z28/SS LS1 car, Even the "Nice" ones I looked at had oil all over the bottom of the car, Then pull the oil cap & puffs like a locomotive. For $10,000....No thanks. I could have bought a ragged out one for $4500 that had been wreaked & poorly repaired....Again, No dice!

I will have about $8,000 all said & done in the car, But that's new tires, brakes, Wheel bearings, Bilstein struts/shocks, Rear end rebuild, Built trans, Low mileage engine, Exhaust, Audio, Cooling system, A/C system, Engine harness. And pay V6 insurance rates. Seems like a better deal?

The main thing in these swaps is the engine and transmission. They are the important and expensive part. Most people that come here looking to do a v6-v8 swap to "save money" have a running v6. For them it is not worth it. Especially when you can sell your v6 for $2500 and you can by a 2000 Z28 with less then 50,000 miles on it for $6500. We have a few people over in the project section that have done swaps. The ones that make the most sense are the ones when someone has a wrecked V8 car and the V6 body is way cheaper then fixing the twisted up V8 body.

I found that the exhaust hanger (Off the back of the trans) is V8 specific, Not a big deal but thought I would share. The Hanger mount appears to be just Auto specific.

Got a new Torque arm mount, $40 at the dealer.

You're getting what you pay for there, because the insurance company will settle only on the lower value of a V6 model if it's totaled (if full coverage) or if stolen.

Just liability for me, I underwrite myself. If it does get totaled which doesn't take much in the eyes of an adjuster on a 14 year old car, I will buy another cheap V6 car & start over with the parts that are salvageable. It getting stolen is a different situation, Hopefully that won't happen.

Rack & Pinion Debate.

'93-'97 LT1/3.4L/3.8L Racks will not work on a LS swap.

'98 Base 3.8L car Racks will not work. (These might have bleed into '99 models)? RS/Z28/SS use a quick ratio V8 Rack?

'00, '01. & '02, All use the same housing, With RS/Z28/SS using a quicker ratio than Base V6 cars?
