What is the difference between a tpi system and my stock 305

You need to tell us what year and model car you have, or give a description of what the top of the engine looks like, or post a picture. The 305 came in many varieties.

Then you have a TBI system (throttle body injected.) TPI is tuned port injection, which is a totally different system than tbi.
