Starter Problems

I am having a problem with my 89 Camaro. I replaced the starter on it and still it wont start. When I turn the key its like its not getting any fire to the starter. Everything else works ( radio, lights, etc). All fuses were checked. Is there something I am missing.

Check the ignition switch start position. Check the neutral safety switch if auto trans, or the clutch switch if manual trans. Make sure there is 12 volts present at all times at the starter end of the cable going to the battery.

It could be a broken wire, but the ignition switch is more likely. In any case, unless you want to start wholesaling parts out, you need to get a voltmeter, and a wiring diagram and start doing some testing as I previously described. Otherwise you can always go to a shop.

Sometimes the best way to diagnose a problem or at least get pointed in the right direction is to work backwards...meaning: using a test light check the small wire at the starter for power when you turn the key to the crank position. If the test light lights then that will eliminate anything in the ignition, neutral safety switch, etc.and most likely will be a bad ground, bad battery, corroded cables, etc. Keep in mind the starter draws more amps than all other stock accessories so even though your lights might work, your starter may not crank withcurrent loss.
One common thing onGM vehicles is the battery cable ends at the battery. Hidden in that red or black plastic can be years of corrosion. If it looks swelled and larger than normal, cut it open and you will probably find some green nasty that loves to eat at the copper cable.
One other quickie would be to hold the key in the crank positon and move the gear shifter around. Try this in park and neutral if it allows you.
