I WAS TOLD BY A FRIEND OF MINE THAT CHEVROLET GREATLY DE-TUNED THE3RD GENCAMAROS IN ORDER TO MEET STRICT EMISSION REGULATIONS. THE HP RATING IS AROUND 200 WITH ALL THE SMOG STUFF ON THERE AND CLOSER TO 300 WITHOUT. IS THIS TRUE? CAN I REALLY INCREASE HP BY REMOVING PARTS RATHER THAN ADDING PARTS?

 

Just telling you as a friend....TURN THE CAPS LOCK OFF.
And your friend is a little off. Not only in his HP figures but how much you can get by removing emission equipment.
Assuming you have a 305 TBI just about the only emissions you could remove and have the car run is the cat, air pump and evap system.
The cat on your car is way better flowing than the early charcoal cats. Not very restrictive any more. The air pump does nothing more than that. Pumps air. It should be working freely and probly less restrictive than your alt when its under a load. And the evap system is only hoses that vent vapors either back through the engine to get burned or a canister with a charcoal filter.

 

Oh and one more thing to mention. I am pretty sure San Diego is not a rural area that is exempt from California smog inspection.

 

ok so what would you say is a more accurate calculation with and without emissions equipment? 305 tbi 5spd trans. and getting the car to pass smog is not going to be a problem. im not concerned about that at all.

 

dont forget the egr valve (exhaust gas recirculator) im not sure how much its worth....hp wise...but its alot cleaner under the hood yo!

 

I totally dissagree.I have an 88,and i removed the smog crap ,and i got avery noticableincrease in power,and I have a newer exhaust system,and i gutted the cat ,and got even more.Not even close to 100hp,but it definitely made the car alot more fun.and the smog pump doesnt decrease hp just by belt tension,not everyone has a ton of money for mods.If you are truely not worried about emissions,then take that sh*t off.Just my opinion

Well there ya go, another gutted cat for the win..... smog is maybe worth 10 to 15 hp.
