It was a small fire......
Hi, folks! This is my first post so be gentle.
Recently let my 16 year old take his (I'm footing the bills, he has no JOB) 88 Sport coupe to the area vo-tech to use as a project car. While there it was discovered that whomever installed the edelbock hi rise intake simply cut the fuel supply line and spliced it with low pressure rubber hose and hose clamps. The shop teacher correctly (I think) surmised that this was an accident waiting to happen and asked me to run out and purchase 10 feet of hi pressure rubber hose and hose clamps while he flaired the exposed fuel line ends.
After the repair, performed not by the instructor but by my wifes favorite ( only) man child ,we drove the car home and parked it for about a week.....until I had to move it.....and itcaught fire.....behind the throttle body. Three glasses of ice tea, a water hose, (andsome undeservedlaughter by some firefighter buddies)later the fire was out with fairly localized damage.
Gotta buy new plug wires, dist. cap and rotor, asundry sensors and wiring back there and the beast will live again. My question is, if I've not already put you to sleep, what besides an obvious fuel line leak would cause a cold start to catch fire like that? The breather was on properly and the engine compartment is very clean. Could the spark havecome from a new plug wire or an unsecured (unmounted)coil?
At least this happened to me. My son would've panicked and we could've lost the car and the house and most importantly him. Any thoughts?
