The popping through your carb could be that you timing is a little retarded, you may need to advance it.

as for the heater hose,

How old is it? it may just be worn out. also how many lbs is your radiator cap? you may just have to put a new cap on it, 16 lbs should be good. If you have one of the locking radiator caps unlock it. I had one on my car and when it overheated it caused my radiator to explode. I got lucky as I could have lost my head gasket.
Also is your car overheating as the radiator hose is swelling? if so you may have a water pump that flows in the wrong direction for your car.

Hope at least some of this helps

My car is a 1990, however, I took the 305 out and went back with a 350. as for the water pump you might be right about it pumping in the wrong direction. I took the radiator off and started the car. I noticed that the water was flowing from the heater core back to the radiator. Is this right? Shouldent it be flowing from the radiator to the heater core and from the heater core to the intake?

Do you still have the heater valve on the car? It will flow out of that pipe in the radiator. Did you use the serpintine belt setup? It will need a reverse flowing water pump. If you used the serpintine then you would need to get the pump for that. The same one for your 305 would work.
Did you have a TBI, TPI or what? Are you using the same system?
