Default hard steering

I have a 91 RS convertible that I just finished restoring and I have one issue. the power steering is really hard. I did take the steering box apart and look inside, but I don't remember taking anything apart, might have moved a couple things. Anyway, The P/S pump is new and seems to be working. didn't notice any issues with steering column when I brought it home, but I suppose something could have happened since then.

thanks

Jim

Was the steering hard before you opened up the steering box, or only after?
If there's air in the system, it will bleed itself after you go through a couple of lock-to-lock cycles.

Thanks for the info, but it isn't that is steers that hard, but the wheel won't return while driving. Example, when you turn a corner the steering wheel stays in that position and won't come back like others do.

One other bit of info..when I do hit the stops the pump doesn't squeel or make any noise at all.

If your steering doesn't feel stiff, then your front end is probably out of alignment. Primarily, the "caster" would be the issue. Caster is the angle at which the upper and lower pivot points of the steering are tilted, if you were to draw a vertical line through the upper and lower ball joints (or upper strut mount in your case). Positive caster tilts the angle back at the top pivot point which keeps the car tracking straight down the road, and is also what straightens the front wheels back out after a turn.
