Been setting for 2 years
I got this 84 5.0 ho and it runs like crap, first thing i wanna do is clean the old gas out of the tank. How hard is it to get that gas out and what needs to be done to acheive this. Also if you guys have any tips on removal of the tankthat would be appreciated.
easiest way i know to do it, is to drop the tank, pour it all out, (remove the fuel pump and sender) pour a bottle of gum cutter or something similar in there. let it sit for a day or so, and dump it all out, then pour about a half gallon or gallon of gas into it and swash it around and dump it back out. with the price of gas you dont wanna waste it, when i did it, i used the old stuff in a old push mower, ran a little rough but did its job perfectly fine. someone might have a better way, but thats how ive done them before
O and dont forget to change your fuel filter too.

Go buy a liquid pump from a nearby auto store. Welle auto has them for 50 bucks. You put the nozzle in your tank and begin pumping with your foot, it sucks all the gas right out.
And after you get the gas out go buy the Rochester Q jet book, a 1 gal bucket of Chem dip and a carb kit with a new float. Q jets are not hard to rebuild, just complicated. Read the book, pay attention to the details, save a couple hundred. The resullts will astound you. Me and my Brother Dave had this down to an art form back in the "80's. Great buy on the car too, I wish I could find an old L69 Z28 as a play toy.

Dropping the tank can be fun! Don't fight it trying to do it half ***.
Jack up the rear of the car as high as you can and suport it under a frame rail. Unbolt the shocks, pan hard rod and torque arm. You need to let the rear drop all the way down. You can leave the control arms bolted and the rear will pivot on them. You can also leave the rubber brake hose hooked up. Drop your exhaust. Now would be a good time to cut it off and install a Flowmaster

Take off the heat shield and now the tank is ready to have the straps removed and snake it out of there. For others that don't know, when you remove the sender on that early of a car the fuel pump will not come out with it. It is a mechanical bolted to the right side front of the motor. Also the fuel filter is in the carb. If you plan to keep that carb invest in a special filter nut wrench. Makes it easier to work on. Flush the fuel lines out before reassembly.
Hey, sorry for hi-jacking this thread, but I just got his first car yesterday, '89 RS with a 305. Nice car, but needs a fuel pump. I have everything on-bolted, but the tank won't come out no matter what we try. The filler neck is hung up and the tank is hitting the torsion bar bracket on the passenger side.
It already has a flowmaster, but I actually thought about cutting it off if the tank would drop out easier.
Any thoughts on that,
thanks

if he comes back with " yep that was it" I will laugh so hard, I will most likely puke, just thinking that its one thing thats simple that alot of us would miss cause its so simple...lololol.
I pretty much have the same car (84 305HO) that had sit for about 10 years. drain the fuel from the engine compartment with an electric pump and add new gas, change the oil and I added some of that marval mystery oil ( recomended by the hot rod shop to help break everything loose( hyd. lifters and such)), plugs and oil/air filters. mine knocked like hell and ran like **** when I first started her up, but it quieted down after about 10 minuts or so and started purring nicely.
and if the tank does not have a leak I would not remove it just to get the old gas out, just add about 10 gallons of good fuel after you pump out the old from the front.
