84 z28 with a 1968 327 please help
Hi. I have purchased a 1984 camaro z28 and it came with a 305 originally but has had a 1968 327 installed. I checked the engine suffix and it is YU. The engine supposedly has a new block and has been rebuilt. But hasnt ran yet. The wiring is out of control. I am thinking of pulling the motor to do a more thorough inspection of the "rebuild". But I am not sure about the wiring. I need a new harness but it is a 327 motor and an 84 camaro so not sure where to start. Any suggestions much appreciated.

take a look at a local salvage yard for a carbed camaro or firebird and inspect, then pull it if its good. if not, you can get replacement harnesses from painless wiring for about $500 and up. what is wrong with the harness? there isnt much to it if it is carbed, but im assuming that it is

I believe the car original may have been efi and it originally had the 305. there are freaking plugs everywhere just dangling there. I may attemp a custom wiring harness myself. but I am young and inexperienced with most of this. If I could figure out the bare minimum of wiring Id need I may be able to pull something off. Thank you

Don't let the wiring intimidate you, it's actually quite simple. Everything you NEED for a carbureted setup is on the drivers side bulkhead and the grommet to the left of the transmission tunnel. Any wires on the passenger side are running to the ECM and can be eliminated (along with the ECM).
Then you're left with your HVAC wiring, windshield wiper wiring, headlight and marker lamp wiring, alternator wiring, grounds, distributor hot lead, tach lead, starter wiring, and assorted gauge wiring.
Here's a picture of what wiring is in my 83 Z28, and it's everything you need to have a fully functioning vehicle and NOTHING you don't:

Don't do that. Keep the factory wiring, there's no reason to redo it. Everything you need to the right, everything you don't to the left (except for the HVAC wiring of course).
I couldn't count how many guys I've seen that thought they were going to rewire everything they needed, only to turn the car into a total mess and hack job.

Lol ya that would be nice. but the problem is that whoever attempted the engine swap totally hacked the wiring. it absolutely had to be removed. many wires were melted or burnt. I have all the wiring under control that I need for exterior lights, interior lights,engine/ignition/charging system, heater, windshield wipers and fluid, and audio, the only problem im facing is if i want to re use the gauges i need to find the wiring diagram for the two plugs that come out of the back of the gauge bezel. I have looked but found nothing i needed yet. i just need to know what the wires are coming out of the 2 plugs (grey and black). and where they go.
