What transmission? And how many miles? I'd also check the VIN for major accidents. If everything is good then 1800 is good price.

If it was in my area $1800 may be a good price depending on if it is decent. A vin check is not always truthful. If I wrecked my car and paid cash to fix it how would a vin check show that. If you have to pay for a vin check save your money. It may mislead you.

If you're driving an older car you aren't going to spend more cash than its worth to fix any serious damage.

And what does that have to do with the price of tea in China. Working in the body shop I have seen many people come in and either not have insurance or not want to report it in fear of thier rates going up. I had a brand new car and had an accident. I fixed it myself. There is no way that will ever show up on a vin check. Non of these things that check the history are 100%. Money better spent would be to have the owner let you take it to a shop to give it a pre-purchase inspection. Which I also have done.

I'm not going to sit here and argue a moot point. It wouldn't HURT him to check the VIN, its not like its going to physically come out and cut his head off if he checks it anyway. You can have it done for free if you look in the right places.
