Default speedometer cable

hello.
i'm replacing the speedometer cable due to no function, and the end that plugs into the transmission is completely frayed.
i've disconnected the cable from the speedometer as according to the Haynes manual, and also from the transmission.
the problem i'm having now is i cannot get this coupler to seperate.
i'm not sure if i'm supposed to pull the cable all the way through the rubber thing that it goes through at the firewall,
or if i'm supposed to seperate this coupler. i'm assuming i have to pull it through somehow, but i don't want to damage that rubber
ring. here's some pics of the coupler i'm referring to.
thanks for any help.
