Default Bad Gas Mileage

I got the 3.1 V6. I get 12 miles to the gallon. Its terrible. I changed oil, filters, put air in the tires, laid off the throttle, and everything! I am just not getting what I should be getting! Any other ides for optimum gas mileage in these tough times. Thank god this is a camaro forum, cause most guys sit there and tell me to buy a prius or a hybrid. Screw that though, I love my car, just wish my baby could go for longer without drinking!

My 88 2.8 used to get just about what your getting when I first got the car several years ago. After last years engine overhaul I'm averaging about 15 mpg city. The major problem in my case isI rarely drives longer than 7 min. each time to and from work. What I suspect is happening is the engine never really heats up to where the ecm is in full close loop. Running mostly in open loop usually is a bit on the richer side. My highway mileage is much much better though. The other bad thing is the Camaro is not a very light vehicle and mated to a small V6 doesn't help power to weight ratio. I'm not sure if you only do short runs but if you're doing alot of highway then yes your mileage is pretty low. Did you pull a couple of yourspark plugs to see if your burning rich?

Well, i plugged it into the computer and it is flashing service for the o2 sensor so I invested my 23 dollars and hopfully that works out. Want to know what my real problem is? I am a big kid. I like the Camaro cause it is the only sports car that fits me and doesnt throw my legs threw the dash. I cant get under that car!!! Its so hard! hahaha, its hard to jack up and it sits so low that even oil is a freakin huge job! hahaha... However the o2 sensor is probably the problem. It indicates that it is burning real rich.
