Default 2.8 L 1988 Camaro Engine computer

How many computers does the above car have ? I was able to find an engine computer at advanced... They did not know if there is also a body control system. If there is a body contol system does it affect the engine timing ?

Reason I am asking is I had blown head gaskets and and had the engine replaced. The guy did a bad job and the new engine does not run right. Nothing wrong with the engine but the timing is off and it back fires.

First thing we did was replace the ignition module but that did not fix it. Still back fires. Mechanic suggested that maybe the engine needs a different computer.

Another question is where are can we look on the engine to get the ID and know exactly what engine was put in the car.

You have only one ECM. Body control moduel came much later. There should be a number on the flat next to the water pump on the passangers side. IDing the motor is not as important as you think. Making sure all the parts are compatible is what needs done. ID ing the engine is not as important as you might think. If I installed a long block 3.4 into your car and I used all your fuel injection it would run decent. That is until I ran enough RPMs that I starved the motor for air.

Did you check the basic stuff? Pull codes, Check the base timing?

Thanks for the feed back.. Yes we checked the timing and set up it was all per the book. I do not have a machine to read codes but the garage the car is at does and I will ask them to pull the codes and post the results. I will pick up the ECM module today and drop it off at the shop. Saw a few posts that that might do the trick..

A 2.8 L MFI was taken out and a 2.8 L MFI was put in so the mating parts should not be a problem.

You do not need a machine to pull codes, all you need is a paper clip. Try a you tube search. There is most likely a video of it.
