Default 1986 Iroc Shifter Cable Problem

First off, yay for my first post. I've recently and unwillingly became the proud owner of 1990 and 1986 Camaros.

The 86 ran when it got here but has been sitting in the yard about a month because we couldn't get it to shift. I jacked the car up and I can manually shift the transmission with my hand. However when the shifter is moved, the actual cable doesnt move, the black "housing" with some sort of round looking boot at the end moves, but that is it.

Could anyone give me a hint as to what might be the problem? I'm not a great mechanic and everything that I have learned has been on my own. Forgive me if it is something that should be obvious, but I'm still new to all of this.

I'll post some pictures momentarily.

Thanks and I look forward to being a member of these forums

Ryan

Hah. Well. I like them, but they're both in non-running condition. Just minor problems tough. Long story on how I got them but that's for another time.

Pictures...

Here's a before picture

And after, once the shifter upstairs is moved. That black "boot" (as I call it) is the only thing that moves. Seems like it should be connected to something but I'm not sure what.

The cable doesn't seem to be broken. If I shift the transmission with my finger into like 3rd, I can get in the card and move the shifter to 1st and hear it shift. After that it's all loose again...

I've got a video uploading to youtube also.]

lol easiest fix in the world.

That black piece just clips to the base of the cable. Duuur. Just took a little more fiddling.

Now lets see if it comes loose again.

Thanks for viewing
