Z28 clutch problems, POP,screeching, smoke= :(
I was coming home from work tonight when i pushed down the clutch to change gears. As i pushed it down there was a loud POP and a terrible screeching sound. I immediately took it out of gear but had to put it back into second to make it to the nearest parking lot. There are only ugly sounds when have the clutch pedal down, and it sounds really nasty and the car definetly isnt running right. Anyway i got out and chexked under the car and smoke was coming out of the tranny area. I had it towed to the nearest transmission shop.
the car is a 1986 z28 with a five-speed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated becuase i dont trust those mechanics. I hate to bring the car in but i feel a tranny/clutch problem is to difficult for me
thanks a bunch

my opinion, how many miles are on your clutch? if it hasent been replaced ever it might just be really old and the pads are probly falling off. and when its engaged the pads hold on. with out your car running, step onyour pedal and listen carfully for any grinding.
Sounds to me you killed the clutch. The transmission will have to come out to replace the clutch. Hopefully the flywheel didn't get all gouged up. There is really nothing much you can do about it without major work.
Thank god theres nothing wrong with the tranny, the screeching was from the throw out bearing, and the smoke from the clutch. They said there was still enough meat on it but it was smooth as glass and had burn marks all over it. SO im replacing the clutch and everything else that broke for $700, could have been worse...
