Default Upgrade to G80 Rear End

Did a search but could not find much on this. What would be involved in upgrading a standard differential to G80. I know I need the G80 carrier. Can it be installed into the standard differential housing? What about the axles? Bearings?

First G80 is the RPO code for Limited Slip rear. Yes a limited slip can be purchased for any rear axle assembly. But first your info is limited to the present type of rear axle, gear ratio, axle shaft spline countand year. Also this is not going to be a cheap DIY mod.

the year is 1990 RS 305 TBI. The current rear is 2.78:1 standard. Not sure of spline count. I will check. I understand that I may have 26 or 28 spline axles, true?
So, if I have 28 spline, I should be able to get complete posi carrier assembly from a G80 7.5" or 7.625" (with bearings), get ring and pinion set,and should be able have shop do the install w/shimming?

You have a 2-series 2:73 ratio 10-bolt with 28 spline axle shafts. So to change you would need a 3-series limited slip carrier, new gear set (3:42 or 3:73), 7.5/625 dia (both are the same ) and rebuild kit. You will need about $700/800 for parts and labor. Now is this going to worth it with the 170 hp305 TBI?? My opinion is NO.......money better spent elsewhere.

? You could do the swap actually pretty cheap. A donor car would be the easiest, but if you just get a complete rear, springs, and sway bar, you can just swap it right in...

The Slang term Posi is short Chevrolets name Positraction which is a Limited Slip. It was a extra cost options and I would guess that 90% of the cars on the road have a open diff.
