Default RE: Timing

get a timing light, hook it to the #1 spark plug wire, loosen the distributor hold down screw just a little bit, enough to rotate the distributor, start the car, point the light at the harmonic balancer, look for the timing mark and see where it is. if you have a rough idle, rotate the distributor to advance the timinga few degrees, once the idle smooths out, tighten the hold down bolt. then take it for a drive and see if it helped.

Default RE: Timing

There should be a VECI label under the hood, that will give you instructions on ignition timing! and you might have to place the Electronic Spark Timing (EST) in bypass mode, by disconnecting the single wire connector, not the four wire connector to the distributor. First thing is you,ll see a line across the harmonic dampener! mark it with white/out or white chalk, it will help you see it better. If you have access to a inductive timing light, there easier to hook-up just place the clip on the #1 wire and hook it up to the battery. locate the timing mark pointer next to the crankshaft pulley, the zero mark is TDC or top dead center the pointer plat will be marked in either 1 or 2 degree marks, and it should have the proper timing mark for your engine already marked, but like 85rs said you can time it by ear or til she smooths out, thats how we used to do it 30 years ago, but sometimes you'll advance it to far, and she turn over like the crankcase is full of molasses. You should be able to do it! good luck, keep us posted.
