Switch Between V8 an V4

Switch Between V8 an V4
On the new camaros they have something that switches from a V8 and V4 when you are only using a little power. I was thinking about doing this to my 86 Camaro. It's fuel injected so I could just put some electric valves on it that would just re-route the fuel back to the tank, and put some relays on the distributor so itwould change it to fire the 4 cylinders in the right order at the right time. I'm good with electronics and I could make the V8 kick in when the car uses alot of power. I think thats all I would have to do to make this work. If anyone knows anything else I would have to do to make this work please post. Will this really save that much gas, is it worth it, does it cause problems with the car, if anyone has any input on this or knows how to do it please help me out. Thanks

The system Mad Mike is talking about was a mechanical system that really never took hold. In those days GM was famous for putting stuff on the market wasn't fully sorted out, including the gas engines converted to work a diesels. LOL
The new stuff is totally computer controlled. Shuts down the injectors and holds both valves closed in the idle cylinders. Special lifters are used that hold both valves closed or work normally on demand. Look at the tech specs on a 06 Impala SS. I drove one of these cars and it is almost impossible to tell if it running on 4 or 8 cyliders, and can't tell when the switch over takes place. It will take a few years to see if this system is reliable, or just another bomb.

If you have to ask, there is no way you could possibly get a displacement on demand system to work, if there is even one you can adapt to your car.
Changing your driving habits will alter your gas mileage in ways you'd never thought possible.
[ul][*]Properly inflate all 4 tires[*]Replace Fuel Filter & Do Basic Tune-Up[*]If 5 speed, no downshifting to slow down[*]Accellerate as slowly as possible, using the least amount of throttle[*]Obviously cut down on idle time[*]Clean MAF[*]Upgrade Air Filter[*]Upgrade exhaust, a free flowing exhaust will allow the end to operate with much less restriction[/ul]
Hope that helps.
