Default Speedometer spiking/ RPM gauge reading high

Hello again everyone. I have a 1991 RS, starting last year the speedometer would not work, until I would hit a bump or go above 50 MPH, is that a cable issue?

2nd, My RPM gauge is reading high, I know the engine isn't revving that hard, but it's going into the red when i'm barely on the gas. Could this be a sensor issue or would it go hand in hand with the speedometer cable>? Thanks.

Davis

the gear for the speedo in the tranny is probably stripped, or the gears in the gauge. tach the gauges off, and see if it spins when you spin the cable input on the gauge. if it does, safely suspend the rear of your car in the air, and run it in gear to see if the speedo cable spins. if it doesnt, replace the cable. if that doesnt fix it, then its the plastic gears in the tranny.

as for the tach, check the wire on the distibutor for a proper connection. double check the contacts on the gauge while its out when youre testing the speedo. if that doesnt fix it, i would say to try running a new wire.

a 91 doesn't have a cable....it's electronic , and it sounds like you have a cluster ground issue causing both your problems. make sure the cluster and ecm have good grounds and go from there.
