Default speedometer not working

1991 camaro RS 305... all of the gauges work in the cluster except for the speedometer, just went out one day. it will go to random speeds or just stay on one. thinking it might be the speed sensor, or if it is possible the whole cluster isnt working. i changed a speed sensor once on a toyota and it was on top of the tranny. is it in the same place on the camaro? or would it be the cluster?

thanks.

it could be many things, but since the speed sensor is the cheapest and easiest to replace, go with that first. its located on the rear of the trans on the tail shaft, and i think its a 2 pin plug. i believe its up on top or close to the top. pull it out and inspect it, and use a mirror to take a look inside the threaded hole it lives in. check to make sure there isnt anything clogging up the exciter ring. since the sensor is magnetic, you can get metal shavings built up and mess up the sensor. its in the same general area if its auto or 5 speed
