Default speedo problems

Hi,
Ihave a 1985 camaro z28, and 5 speed. Speedometer quit working.
I disconnected the cable down by the trans, and attached it to a drill motor, and the speedo needle moves fine. I then disconnected the
cable at the box, and also the trans, but didnot see anything really wrong.
Is the problem in the trans ?
Please help.
thanks,
clintwood

By working the speedo with the drill, you eliminated that point up as being the problem. It's possible the clip that holds the drive gear on the output shaft of the trans has broken, letting the gear slide back away from the driven gear. If you pop out the speedo housing and gear, you should be able to see the drive gear back inside the hole. Also inspect the drive and driven gear to make sure the teeth aren't chewed up, or that the square hole where the cable fits into isn't rounded out. Your problem is with one of those things.
