Default Smog Pump

I just removed my engine and trans. I have an 89 RS 305 TBI. Since the motor is out i want to remove the Smog pump, i am not worried about inspection i do not live in a state that messes with emissions. Is there a down side to removing the smog pump on my camaro. I have had experience in building a 400 block that is running off a Z28 ECM. My dad has not had problems with his setup but i am just wondering about what you guys think. Pros? Cons?

No there should be no problem. All it is doing is pumping air in you exhaust to dilute it. Just when you start unpluging wires then the computer is gonna throw a code. So just leave whatever plugged in and tuck it away.

no it wont hurt if anything it will give you more hp smog pumps blow anyway. i hate em luckily my 86 is for the drag strip anyway or else i would have to have them for emissions.

Where is the HP robbed from by having an air pump. You can turn it by hand and an alt under a load has more of a drag than the pump so it is not in the belt. And the pump just puts air into you exhaust.
How much of a gain do you think there is with out a pump? Is it just in the loss of weight?

I'm just speculating here, but I would imagine that there's some power lost from having more gases flowing in the exhaust, creating unwanted backpressure, and it could probably be easily offest by using one pipe size up from what you'd have been using without the pump. Just a thought, though. Not sure how accurate that may actually be.
