check the plug going into the maf and the wiring, could be shorted out. my car would run without it plugged in, but never drove it

I ran my car for about a year with the Maf unplugged with no problems. Only problem was the SES light and a piece of black tape took care of that. I also knew the problem was the plug for the Maf.After I finally took a close look a the plug I discovered a bent pin. I straighten the pin and pluggied it back in.. No SES light and also almost no change in performance or mileage. This was about ten years ago.

So im my Opinion, you can run with the Maf unplugged becuse the ECM is running in a stored limp home mode with no input from the Maf.

the good news is that the vehicle will run rich vs lean. I would not suggest opening up your exhaust with headers or even a muffler change and also would not suggest advancing your timing. In fact, I'd probably retard it. Since you have taken away the ability for the A/F ratio to be adjusted what happens when it gets cooler and you have more dense air? Will you then be running lean?

Who knows......

You can run with MAF disconnected as long as there is also a MAP. Cars with only a MAF will have problems running properly if the MAF is disconnected. On cars with both the MAF and MAP, the MAP is used to get the proper A/F mixture during startup, after which the MAP is ignored and the MAF takes over (Mass flow mode). If the MAF is disconnected the PCM will continue to look at the MAP and rely on fuel and spark maps coded in memory (Speed density mode). When the MAF is in use it allows the PCM to make corrections to the A/F tables on the fly, which should result in somewhat better performance and economy.
