Default replacing speedometer cable

Im replacing the speedometer cable and housing on my '86 IROC.

I've gotten the cable out and disconnected the transmission end of the housing, the dash end of the housing is not coming out of the firewall.

Is this because of a gromet?

there should be a grommit, but also check to make sure there isnt a wire or brace wrapped around it. i think there might be a rubber coated peice of metal that half wraps around the cable to keep it from rubbing, i dont remember if there is one inside or not

I've gotten the cable housing through the firewall. The Chilton and Haynes books were of no help.

The piece that the transmission end of the cable housing screws into broke, what part is it?

That mistake might prove to be a pain in the ***. There was a recall on those housings some years back, so finding the original is tough. The updated piece sucks and doesn't fit well. There are aftermarket aluminum ones, but they suck 2x as bad and leak once hot. Don't buy anything unless you've described what year and model the car was and make sure its the same dimensions. It took me four tries to get the right piece.

The driven gear and gear housing have been replaced but the speedometer still isn't working. Do I need to check the speedometer?

Pull the cable out of the housing and give it a spin and have someone check the gauge. If it works, then put the driven gear on the cable end and repeat. Like I stated earlier, getting the correct parts is sort of a pain as the new housing and gear looks completely different than original.

The driven gear housing, driven gear, drive gear, drive gear retainer clip and seals were all replaced. The speedometer is working now.
