Default Questions: Going from Import to Camaro

Well I'm making the switch from my 2002 Mazda Protege 5 to getting a 1986 Camaro IROC Z I'm just super sick of imports now my question is what are the common problems with these cars, my buddie talked me into getting a Camaro over a mustang cause he has one but his no good for information cause he just keeps saying its the best car ever and it wont break down on you.
Thanks for the help for all that reply.

Also the car has the following:
190,000km/118,000miles on the motor
T TOP
Power Locks/Windows
Auto

Asking price is $5000CDN hoping to talk owner down to $4000CDN or 3250UUS

Well your friend is right! expect nothing but pure stunning GM quality!
But seriously:
T-tops leak - take a good look at the weatherstripping
Doors sag - lift the door up and down to see if it has any play, it is supposed to shut with ease
Paint Peels, seems to be the worst with red - lift the lid on the center console and you will see a bunch of 3 letter codes, see is you see one that reads VAN, meaning that your paint could start peeling. This is not a huge deal but i would be little turned off.

Random squeeks and rattles - take it for a drive

Lukily its an IROC-Z so the suspension should be firm but take it over a few bumps and feel it.

Oh and expect the front bumper to rub on everything, ive painted mine 3 times since i got it.

it has the TPI but cant tell if its 6 or 8. if an 8 youll like the feel when you get on it. if a six you can put an 8 in later. lol. there are reported issues with the tach not reading correctly, but shouldnt be an issue and the oil gage as well sticks, but as long as it reads when running above the stick will be a non issue. as with any car 20 plus years old there will be issues as to how the previos owners treated and cared for it. even the t top seals are not that big an issue to replace and when it finally warms up you will be glad you have the t tops. all in all an excellant car and lots of after market parts available.
this is the best site to be if your having issues that I have found. some will anser your question out right and ask additional questions of you, and some will anser your question as though you were dumb or rib ya cause ya dont use "proper english" but still an excellant site. even the A holes know there stuff. lol.
anyway welcome to the site and good luck with your purchase, I know you will enjoy it.

It's an 8. An IROC-Z would never have a V6 unless it's a fake, and it looks significantly different from the V8s anyway. Being an '86, it'll be a 305, and you'll be getting 190 hp and 285 torque out of it, stock. Assuming it's got no problems, that is.

Obviously, check the fluids, take it for a drive- and don't pussyfoot it when you do. Ask permission first, but give it some hard stops and starts as well as the easygoing-type drive. Unless he's got something to hide, the owner shouldn't have an issue with that, I think.

As far as the front bumper, it takes a bit of getting used to, but it's quite possible, and in fat pretty easy not to scrape it on anything, but plan on repainting it at least once over. Little stuff- when you go up a ramp, pull up halfway beside it, and turn sharply, rather than trying to go straight into it. Going down is trickier and takes a lot more practice, but it is more or less the same idea.

Other than that, have a read through the forums, see what issues other owners have had, and what they've done to fix it.

Hopefully adding $100 a week to new parts to the car will keep her running strong
