Hey Everyone.

I would first off like to introduce myself, I'm Adam I live in Kansas and have been a long time Camaro guy. I owned my first Camaro 1991 RS 305 TBI 5-speed, bought it the summer before I started my senior year of high school (2000) and kept her till I got married in 2005 and been regretting selling it ever since.

I recently came across and purchased a 92 Camaro RS 305 TBI Auto w/ T-tops for $500.

My question/problem. there are no keys and the guy told me there wasn't but he was able to bypass the VATS system and had it running for a period of time over the summer.

My local dealership can cut keys from the VIN back to 1990 (as long as its the original ignition).

The blinker switch needs to be replaced and the guy I bought it from I think was in the process of doing it when the bypass he did on the VATS system quit and he decided not to mess with it anymore so he bolted the steering wheel back on to sell it. so I have a torn apart steering column.

So my question is what would be the best think to do in this situation?

Get Keys cut from the VIN and hope it works? (if it doesn't I'm out $30.00)

Go ahead and replace the Ignition Cylinder and get keys for the dealership to cut from? (if I change the Cylinder will the VATS Resistance stay the same?) and they can just cut the #key from codes from the VIN

This is probably the biggest issue I have so far. I've never really messed with this stuff before.

Any information or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam

Default Vats

They key should have what is called a pellet on it. The dealer can scan the key and tell you which one it is, if I remember right they have one through fourteen as pellets. You could get a new ignition switch from the dealer or parts store, and then have the key cut with the corresponding pellet code. The code doesn't change with the switch.
