That air dam is what helps push the air under the car up into the radiator. If you dont have one GET ONE!! It is critical like ScottD is saying.
If you have a 195 T-stat in the car then running just below the 220 mark sounds right. You have a carb on that engine right? Rule of thumb, 180 for carb and 195 for FI.
Your engine, when shut off will continue to "heat up" a little. This is simply the water absorbing the heat from the cylinders and not able to disipate it through the radiator. Why it didnt go down as you drove home I dont know unless your air dam is gone, or your fan clutch is not working.
Leave the fan shrouds on and alone they are also a big help to air flow.

wow, is that old stuff butttttttttt, the same holds for when driving at 30mph or greater, The car shoud be running close to thermostat rating ie: 180, 195 etc
ok i have the air dam i saw it last night and, its not broken or anything. I do have a clutch can and that thing is pulling air real good. Friday im going to do timing chain water pump thermostat, spark plugs and valve cover gasket. ill let you guys know whats up when i get done friday afternoon.
ok so just to recap. My engine was doing just fine. this whole time it was my gauges, It had a bad connection on it and a couple of bolts missing on the cluster which made it move around and get wrong readings haha.
NO! There is supposed to be a large, flat strip protruding from below your cars nose. Its very easily damaged by curbs...and often removed by unknowing owners. This 'air dam' is CRUCIAL to your cars cooling system. Dont even think about replacing anything until you verify if that dam is in place or not.
I've replaced everything that has to do with the cooling system except the radiator, but i had the radiator rodded out and rebuilt.
You had a radiator rebuilt? That seems a bit overkill when a replacement radiator is around 100 bucks. If you are overheating while sitting still, you need to check everything. Look for any debris obstructing your radiator as well. My bet is your rebuilt radiator wasnt rebuilt so well or your fan clutch isnt working right.
