That air dam is what helps push the air under the car up into the radiator. If you dont have one GET ONE!! It is critical like ScottD is saying.

If you have a 195 T-stat in the car then running just below the 220 mark sounds right. You have a carb on that engine right? Rule of thumb, 180 for carb and 195 for FI.

Your engine, when shut off will continue to "heat up" a little. This is simply the water absorbing the heat from the cylinders and not able to disipate it through the radiator. Why it didnt go down as you drove home I dont know unless your air dam is gone, or your fan clutch is not working.

Leave the fan shrouds on and alone they are also a big help to air flow.

TIG this is an 83 Z there were no electric fans on it. These still used the spring thermal clutch fans.

ok so just to recap. My engine was doing just fine. this whole time it was my gauges, It had a bad connection on it and a couple of bolts missing on the cluster which made it move around and get wrong readings haha.

How do you know if the air damn is damaged or not? My car always overheats when i'm not moving.
I've replaced everything that has to do with the cooling system except the radiator, but i had the radiator rodded out and rebuilt.

Your air dam is an unmistakable big piece of black plastic trim under the car. You cant miss it. If its broke, it will either be missing giant pieces (from curbs, etc) or missing all together.

You had a radiator rebuilt? That seems a bit overkill when a replacement radiator is around 100 bucks. If you are overheating while sitting still, you need to check everything. Look for any debris obstructing your radiator as well. My bet is your rebuilt radiator wasnt rebuilt so well or your fan clutch isnt working right.
