Default Need help with horsepower!

I just bought an 82' z28 manual 4 speed. Since it's considered historical I don't have to go through inspection. I'm taking out the cad converter and just putting straight pipes. I was told that I can take out certain hoses or parts that have to do with emissions,to maximize horsepower. Is this true? If so what can I do?

If the original engine, it would be a 305. Either 145 hp (with a 4 barrel) or 165 hp (with FI).
Removing the emissions stuff isn't going to gain you any power, you'd be doing it for engine cosmetic reasons.

Original 5 liter v8 engine with no
Mods. I wanna bypass any emissions or computer safeties since I don't have to inspect it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
ECM does make some pretty good decisions in engine operation.
Unless you're going to modify the engine to '60's configuration, then it might be worth it.

On later model cars the engine is designed to work with the emissions stuff on.I would pull your 305 out and put it on a crate. Then Put in a crate engine but put your emissions and Carb set up from the 305. Can you say "sleeper"

Your carburetor and spark timing are computer controlled, You need the computer. You can disconnect the EGR and the Evap system be neither of those is going to add any HP at wide open throttle. Evap is just a gas tank and carb venting system and the EGR valve turn off under load. EGR valve can gunk up the intake which is why most racers get rid of it.

Even your Cat will not hurt that engine much unless its partially plugged. To eliminate the emission system you need a new carb and new distributer and I would be amazed if you could feel the difference. Most likely all you will do is drop in MPG.

The emission part of the engine that is hurting the power the most is the low compression. There is no simple fix for that. The most cost effective way to get to real power is an engine swap.

if it runs good just drive it till it needs an engine ,then like said look for a crate engine ,those cars with the 305 engines were not very .porweful,I seen an updated 305 on ebay a long block making 350+ hp so that is an option for more hp At 899.00 for a .short block ,though I would go .with 350 or bigger as the 305 is known to be weak unless built right
