Default Killer Z Build Thread, Round Two

Inevitably, she's too slow for my taste, and I would like to change some things that I should have done in the first place.

The plan over the course of this winter and spring is to pull the engine out by dropping the entire K frame assembly. The rear axle will be removed (again!) and I will strip the underside of the car and coat in either Rust Bullet or Por15.

The engine bay will be stripped of all the current paint and be professionally repainted and clear coated.

The engine will be stripped to the short block and inspected for any wear. I don't plan on finding any, as it only has 5,000 miles on it. The engine will be repainted and modded accordingly.

The car is a 1983 Camaro Z28

Current Engine Specs:

1974 350 4 bolt, casting #3970010
Scat steel crank
Stock rods (with only 27,000 miles on them)
Forged aluminum pistons
Melling high volume oil pump
Molly rings
Very mild cam
Stock 350 heads
ProForm 1.5/1.6 ratio full roller rockers
Edelbrock Performer intake
Double roller timing set
Holley Street Avenger 670 Carb
Jegs shorty headers, 2.25" exhaust back to a Flowmaster 80 Series

Transmission: 700R4, fully built with high volume pump, Z pack clutches, Kevlar bands, Corvette servos, Transgo shift kit, 2300 stall converter, external cooler, B&M ratchet shifter, etc.

Suspension: Not much done here. Factory LSD rear end with 3.42 gears and rear discs, and Energy Suspension bushings. All the brakes are new, but stock replacements. They stop the car fine however, so I think I'm keeping them stock. Same with the Monroe shocks installed.

Now, here's the goodies for this winter:

Engine:

Crane Blue Racer 1064 cam (bought)

906 Casting Vortec Heads (bought)

Edelbrock Hardened steel pushrods

Hedman ceramic coated long tubes

Finned cast aluminum oil pan (bought)

Jegs cast aluminum valve covers

GMPP cast aluminum timing cover (bought)

Carb will be sent to National Carburetors to be refreshed and re-jetted to match the larger cam.

Suspension:

BMR Steering Brace

BMR Subframe Connectors

Sportline Lowering Springs

I'm budgeting $3,000 to get it done. About $1600 in engine parts, $1000 in suspension, and another $400 for misc. supplies.

If I had one the lottery I would be doing A LOT more than this, haha. No, I just work my *** off

Probably nothing real fancy. The factory HEI with an upgraded coil, rotor, cap, and module sparks just fine up to 6,500 RPM.

Okay, so to update this thread:

I shifted my intentions away from the suspension to the body. I figure rather than drop over $1000 in a tubular suspension setup, I could take that and work the body out pretty well.

So far I've got a brand spankin' new front bumper cover, drivers side ground effects (mine's cracked), POR15 for the underside, a quart of Dupont Jet Black for the engine bay, primer, and a brand new grinder.

The plan is to yank the engine out next week and get to work on it. At the same time I'll be stripping paint off the engine bay and the underside. Everything under the hood as well as the front clip, K frame, and rear axle will be removed.

As of right now I've got about $750 cash to spend, as well as a $250 dollar Jegs gift certificate. I would have around $1500 to spend but between buying gifts, gas to visit family, and loss of hours at work really puts a damper on the Camaro fund

Once the engine is out I'll inspect the bottom end for any abnormal wear (it has about 5,000 miles on it), and if all is well, I'll place an order for heads, a cam, and a gasket set as well as some other goodies

Just bought the cam yesterday Went with the Crane 1064 off ebay. From what I've seen it will fit my needs perfect, and was only $151 shipped including Eaton anti pump up lifters.

Yup! That's why I'm cutting suspension parts that I don't really need. A tubular K frame and A arms look cool and save some weight, but other than that there aren't too many advantages. Not for the $1000 plus it will take to make it work at least.
