the impossible-to-find starter
I am working on a 1984 Camaro for a friend. I am a Mustang guy (sorry) and am new to the world of Chevy. The car had a 305 from the factory, and currently has a fresh 1974 350 4bbl from a Malibu or other large passenger car. The car also has (I guess) the stock drivetrain (Auto tranny, flexplate, ect.) from 1984. So with the 1974 350 Stock 1984 tranny & flexplate combo it seems to be impossible to find a starter. The starter that was on the car with the older 350 that was blown had a straight bolt pattern for the starter. The Motor we put in it has the staggared bolt pattern. The problem with all the starters I can find (I looked at almost every starter at my local Auto Zone) is that the starter motor is HUGE, and when bolted up, the teeth on the starter miss the flexplate by about 1/2". So aparently the starters with the staggared bolt pattern are made for use with a larger flexplate/torque converter combo... Am I missing something, or does Chevy not have a starter for this combo? Thanks -Ben

RE: the impossible-to-find starter
Most Chevys hadd either a 153 or 168 tooth flywheel/flexplate. Apparently you hav the small 153 tooth flexplate, so you need a starter for the small flexplate. Check with Summit or Jegs, they list a good assortment of starters.
