granding sound when trying to start

Default granding sound when trying to start

when i go to start my 305 with a quadrajunk car i get a loud grinding sound and smoke comes out my carb...could this be my starter or did i jam my pistons????

Have some one look while you crank. But I suspect the engine may me seized.

pull the starter and check the bendix and the flywheel i bet the teeth are chewed up. some of those starters have to be shimed. you may think it's a bad starter or batt. when all you need is a $2 shim kit. After 15 years of working on SB Chevys. I've seen a thing or three, including those Quadrajunks, as you call them, flat outrun better cars. don't be so quick to judge the Q jet I've got two and the one on my '79 Z28 has never been touched. the Q jet on my truck, that replaced the Holley, has been there for 5yrs. I installed it, set the idle speed and hav'nt touched it since. and they both pass the smog test first time every time.
