tapping sound on a cold start?
as soon as i start my engine for the first time of the day i hear a loudtapping that lasts for about 20 seconds. it doesn'ttap after that, just when i start it up after it's been sitting awhile.does anyone know what could be wrong and about how much i would have to pay to fix it?
ya i think its a piston too the sound is coming from one of the heads can the piston be adjusted? and how much would it cost. i got a 1996 6cyl.
edit: i appologize it's a tapping sound.

Piston slap is something you keep once you got it. It means the pistons arefitting loosely in the cylinder. If it goes away once the engine is warmed up, don't worry about it. However, you said the noise goes away in about 20 seconds, and thenIMO it is not piston slap, because the engine does not warm up that quickly.I suspect you have a valve lifter that drainsdown when the engine is at rest, and makes noise until it gets pumped back upafter the engine is started. This is not too bad either, as long as it goes away quickly, but eventually it will get worse, and just stay noisy and then chew up the cam lobe.
I have a similar issue. I just had my head gasket replaced and now there is a tapping noise but it never goes away. It isn't loud. It almost sounds like a loud injector. Also when I start up the oil pressure is above half way and stays there until after 20 or so minutes into the drive. It never heats up unless like yesterday it was 98 degrees and we are sitting still. However after 20 minutes when I slow down and the RPMs go down the guage goes to the mark above 0. I am thinking main, and connector rod bearings. Want to be sure before I tear into it though. I can't explain the tapping. A friend thinks if I put 20 50 oil in it it will stop. I have 10 30 in it now. It has about 150,000 on it. Can anyone lend a helping hand?
